I think it’s because in our youth-obsessed culture we have a belief that “older” means “sicker” and “no longer relevant”. Today’s Boomers and Silent Generation would disagree and want design to speak to their actual lifestyles…vibrant, active, engaged….and maybe a tad slower. So yes, they may need a cane or a wheelchair, but why do they have to look like geriatric, hospital goods. Why can’t a cane have color, texture and pattern rather than the antiseptic steel and black? And I’d like to see a wheelchair designed by Tesla or Audi. Streamlined, aerodynamic and comfortable. Uplifting, empowering design for the biggest and most wealthy cohort in our society.
