Fascinating Trompe l'Oeil

This has to be seen up close to appreciate. Remarkable design technique and execution, aided one hopes by modern materials (I'm thinking Gorilla Glass v.3 or higher). Beautiful work.

3D Food Printer Cart

3D printing has been big news over the past year. MakerBot  has changed the world of creating and printing even for food. Green Geometries Laboratory designed this 3D food printer cart that allows you to print your food instantly. The architecture of the food cart is a piece of art in itself.

This cart prints 3D chocolate while you wait. And if you're wondering what those sheets are, those are actually plastic plates that your chocolate get's printed on.

And the result...

What will they print up next? A burrito?

Architecture For Dogs (video)

We love our four-legged furry friends...after all, they are known as man's best friend. Directed by Japanese architect, KENYA HARA of the  HARA DESIGN INSTITUTE, NIPPON DESIGN CENTER, INC, he has created an exhibition of architectural designs for humans and their beloved dogs. Currently there are 13 pieces of architecture created each by individual architects. All the blueprints are available to download for free so you to build these incredible designs for your dog.

The exhibit will be open to the public in Miami starting this week including an open house for dogs Dec 7-9, 2012. For more information about the exhibit, please visit Architecture for Dogs

p.s.

The t-shirt design is pretty cute if you have a small pup and stack of old tees! By the way, these designs work for our meowing friends too!

Did You Ever Want To Live In A Bubble? (video)

Remember John Travolta in the "The Boy In The Plastic Bubble"? Ever since then, I've had a fascination about living in a bubble...not because of some immune deficiency problem, but to have that enclosed "cocoon" feel. Well, check out Micasa Lab's Cocoon 1. Life is possible in a bubble!

You can use this indoors or out and it even comes equipped with modular furniture and a working kitchen with water and a sink.

Love the design, functionality and portability!

Autostadt CarTower: A VW Vending Machine, Pretty Much

If you think vending machines are awesome...Wolfsburg, Germany, home to Volkswagen might be one of the coolest places on Earth...for mechanical and auto lovers. There are 2 glass high-rise garages which hold 400 new cars each before they are delivered to the showroom or customer.

The inside works like a vending machine. 2 fully automated mobile units move up and down a central lift picking up the cars that needs to be delivered or delivering new ones that need to be stored. The cool thing is, if you visit, you can actually ride in a panaoramic glass lift that takes you around the internal tower of cars.  You pretty much get a first hand experience and view of how the cars are being stowed and removed.

There are tons of videos on Youtube of the inner workings of this genius parking and storage station. Here's a nice short clip...some of the others are quite long.

I believe the Autostadt was built for the Expo 2000. Because of the unique architecture and gallery of Volkswagen, Bentley, Škoda, Audi and SEAT, they still get over 2 million visitors a year. However, I think the TurmFahrt, the CarTower Discovery, is one of the biggest draws. The Autostadt is definitely going on the places to visit list next time I venture to Germany.

Take a virtual tour of Autostadt here: Autostadt

Push Button Houses By Adam Kulkin

Renowned architect of pre-fab houses, Adam Kalkin's Push Button takes recyled and mobie living to the next level. He has pretty much re-invented and re-designed shipping containers to unfold with the push of a button to reveal a living space complete with a bedroom, a bathroom, kitchenette, and living area, all in 90 seconds.

The house was orginally debuted at Art Basel 2005. He currently takes this creation on the road to various art festival like Art Basel, Venice Biennale, etc. The one that tours now is actually a fully functioning ILLY CAFE!!!

I've tried tracking down where this is to close or open up next and can't seem to find much info on the next appearance. Would have been cool to see it at the Time Warner Center in 2007, but missed that one!

Click here to watch a short film about the Push Button House (you have to get over the annoying ads first, but...Snag Film's gotta make a buck.)

Is The Slide The New Water Cooler?

Have you noticed that every new office comes with a slide? Is this the new office architecure to inspire, motivate and move people around faster than taking the stairs? Meet you at the other end of the slide!

Check out the Red Bull office in London...

And the Lego office in Denmark...

Google office in Zurich...

I think it's time for a slide!

p.s.

I did just get asked, "how would this effect office attire for women?" No more skirts. haha!
